If you have fairly good knowledge of computers (because you are an IT pro) and you have some administration experienc(as you mentioned in your post), you might be able to find a MIS position in some non-IT companies (e.g, retail, wholesales, finance, etc). The need for IT professionals in these sectors a larger than pure IT companies. And the pay rate is not bad at all. For a position like this you don't have to be an expert on a particular field(software, hardware, network, database, etc.), but you must be a Jack-of-All, e.g, someone who has decent knowledge for all the above fields -- you can install software on Windows 2000, configure tcpip, write unix shell scripts, mess with SQL statement on Microsfot SQL 7/2000, and help your accounting manager with his/her quarterly financial reports using Visual Basic and Excel Macro. There are many companies (small to medium in size. the bigger companies always have three people doing one person's job so they can fire any of the three at any time) are dying to find somebody like this. I actually read from somewhere in the next 10 to 20 years Internal IT support expert will be in huge demand.
I would not switch career path, but I would enhance my strength with knowledge/experience in accounting, company finance and operation. The two most critical elements in a modern small to medium size company are data retrieval and data analysis. Your IT backgroud will help you retrieve data (through programming and system knowledge), and your accounting/finance experience/knowledge will help you analyze data. What is operation all about -- make decisions based on analysis which in turn based on data retrieved and analyzed.
