本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛As an English learner, I need to initialize talks with other English speakers. But I have a rule: try to avoid discussing things related to China.

Of course, I know things about China very well. But I don't think my English is good enough to describe China. Quite often, I see Chinese students are keen to discuss Chinese stuff with foreigners. Some people are so excited as they criticise Chinese government and culture before non-Chinese poeple. Actually, they might not do the right things they think they are doing.

For us, English is just a tool. We have limited energies and time. It seems it is better for us to discuss about pizzas, cars, TV shows, insurance policies, garments names, blahblah, instead of Chinese traditions, Chinese food, Chinese politics, ..., you name it.

I may talk about Chinese things among my Chinese friends. But I think it is ridiculous if we try to have non-Chinese people understand things in China, or let them judge the right or wrong on the things related to China.

Here is a story. A few years, an American girl joined a demostration activity organized by Richard Gere before Chinese consulate in New York. The girl was so angry with the Chinese goverment, shouting some slogans and stomping her feet. She attracted a journalist. The latter asked her: "Do you know where Tibet is? " She was stunned. After a while, she responded: "Eh, I think it's in some corner of China".
